The London Cushion Company loves... Anorak

Anorak was founded in 2007 by London based RCA textiles graduate Laurie Robertson. After noticing a gap in the market for stylish products for the great outdoors, she launched Anorak with the hugely successful kissing stags and kissing rabbits sleeping bags. Since then, the brand has taken the countryside by storm with a product range that now includes aprons, picnic blankets, garden kneelers and cotton cushions. Childhood adventures while camping in the Scottish highlands where the inspiration for Anorak and today the brand continues to promote fun times and adventures in the great outdoors.

Each Anorak cushion features:

The couple have varied design backgrounds. Hannah studied at the RCA and then worked for Conran and Partners and Robin studied at Brunel. The company - ‘people will always need plates’ launched in 2004 and they aim to produce, thoughtful and stylish products as a direct antithesis to the current proliferation of cheap, throwaway design. ‘On the rare occasions when we're not busy bringing architecturally-based homewares to discerning customers, we also design homewares for discerning high-street customers.’ Says Robin and Hannah as they unveil their latest look in Habitat. Just recently, they’ve moved out of London and had a beautiful baby girl. Their dog is only a tiny but jealous of the new arrival. We’re proud to have teamed up with designer Jan Constantine for our Nostlagia collection.
Jan has creativity in her genes and she’s as British as they come. She was inspired to begin making cushions by the beautiful embroidery passed down to her by her grandmother and great aunts. Now, based in a stable block in the heart of the Cheshire countryside and working with a team of highly skilled craftspeople, she produces exquisite designs based on nature that she hopes will be heirlooms for the future. ‘I want to create something that will bring joy to people and be handed down,’ she says, ‘just as the embroidery skills of my artisans have been handed down through many generations.’ Each Jan Constantine cushion features: • Unique design. • Top-quality hand-woven natural cotton or silk fabric. • Natural dyes and yarns.

Recycling and treasuring old forgotten fabrics and items – are a huge trend this season, so it’s no surprise that renowned textile designer Becky Oldfield is leading the way with a collection of contemporary British cushion designs mixed with old ex-forces memorabilia. Becky graduated from Goldsmiths of London in 2000. She caters for large commissions which appeal to mods and rockers and British communities living around the world. Her hallmarks are the emphasis of heritage and likes to incorporate personal touches whether it is printed on distressed silk or cotton. ‘The beauty of a cushion is that it’s the quick fix of the interiors world; an injection of colour and nostalgia that requires minimal effort but has maximum impact,’ she says. Meet Delia Peel and Juliet Thornback, who have worked with The London Cushion Company.
The duo’s design pedigree is top rate – they trained at Goldsmiths – it’s their gentle sense of the surreal which makes their designs stand out. The starting point for each of their bright and beautiful cushions are the hand drawn, delicately structured, line drawings admired by the likes of the General Trading Company and Liberty. ‘They love making beautiful items that celebrate the quirkiness of British tradition and taste and we DON’T do Christmas,’ they say. They live and work in London and have recently moved to a bigger and brighter space at the Cockpit Arts centre in Islington to accommodate their evergrowing business. The London Cushion Company loves... Donna Wilson

Let us introduce you to Donna Wilson and her beautiful cushions.

Super-soft, traditional with a modern twist designs that work wonderfully in both classic and contemporary homes – that’s what Donna’s designs are famous for. What’s less well known is the journey it takes to create them. Donna says – ‘I work with a small family business in Galasheils. They took a chance on me when I was only making very small numbers of things and now as the business has grown I'm happy that to be ordering more from them!
The fabric is knitted then sent down to London and we make it into cushions and creatures!’
Donna Wilson studied Design and Craft at Gray’s school of Art in Aberdeen, Scotland before gaining an MA in mixed Media and Constructed Textiles at The Royal College of Art, London. She was a student working with Ingrid Tait of Tait and Style and she credits her high levels of innovation to working with such a talented and exciting designer. She sells many designs through the furniture shop; SCP.
